A small study published in the JAMA Cardiology looked at 26 college athletes who had tested positive for coronavirus . All of them had mild disease or no symptoms. The scientists scanned their hearts using MRI to look for Inflammation, scarring and other heart problems. They found that 15 percent had signs of myocarditis. They don’t know for sure if these changes were from covid because they didn’t have baseline MRIs.

A national registry is being formed of college athletes with cardiac issues that might be related to covid. Most athletes will be able to return to sports after several weeks of rest and isolation but athletes should be aware of signs of heart involvement such as chest pain and shortness of breath.
